.sucks sucks, .com rules

Before the rollout of the gTLDs, businesses were really only concerned about owning the domain names that allowed them to promote themselves. Target owns Target.com, Hillary Clinton owns HillaryClinton.com. But now, the crafty domain prospectors over at Vox Populi would like you to believe that the era of positivity has changed. With the rollout of the .sucks domain, all sorts of organizations are clamoring to register their name.sucks before someone who hates them does. And to make it an even bigger headache, Vox Populi is charging businesses an annual fee of $2,500 to register their domain defensively. That’s 250 times more expensive than the fee for a normal .com.

But should we really be trembling in our boots about the h8rs all over the web registering every possible .sucks domain and disparaging us into oblivion? The short answer? No. The .sucks domain is just a more cleverly marketed version of something that’s as old as the internet itself: trolling. What’s to stop the trolls from registering HillarySucks.com, HillaryReallySucks.com, TheClintonsSuck.net, or any of the other thousands of iterations that have always been available? The gTLDs are getting a lot of hype these days, but it’s all just speculation at this point. Right now we only know one thing to be true – .com rules. And .sucks? Well, I think you get the idea.
